Applications

The potential applications of our metal foams are manifold. Our hybrid foams are used, in particular, where their multifunctionality offers advantages in that several properties of the foam can be advantageously used simultaneously.

The excellent energy absorption property provides metal foam with potential uses in those areas wherever it is possible to protect persons, parts or entire machines during collisions. The kinetic energy is ideally absorbed by the metal foam through plastic deformation so that persons or components remain undamaged or unharmed. This technology can be used in the automotive industry, for example as protection during side impacts or frontal collisions. In future electric cars, the battery packs can be protected and simultaneously cooled by hybrid metal foams. The area of trains is also another potential application. The ability to excellently absorb energy can also be used very practically in the military or private sector, for example, to protect vehicles or aircraft from explosions, shrapnel, IEDs or ballistic missiles.

Metal foams can also be found in many applications in lightweight construction, as they have a high porosity and/or low density. The low weight, usually paired with excellent energy absorption is needed in the automotive, aerospace and military industries, for example. A reduction in fuel consumption and at the same time greater passenger safety are arguments in favour of this new material. The high stiffness-to-weight ratio of our hybrid foams is also important in lightweight construction. It is this suitable for use in sandwich panels with aluminium or steel and metal foam. Further applications are the use in solar cells or mirrors. The high stiffness combined with low weight also offers advantages in mechanical engineering. When the weight of larger movable parts is reduced, so is their moment of inertia. This means the parts can move more precisely and faster.

A distinction needs to be made between the different areas in structural and/or optical functionality. An important area of application is architecture/design, in which metal foams are used in façades or interiors for walls, or ceilings for aesthetic reasons due to their futuristic appearance. Depending on the specific case, the metal foam also provides sound absorption and/or serves as a flame-retarding element. In addition, the ability to absorb energy very well can be applied to building protection such as against explosions or earthquakes. Due to their large inner surface, their porous structure, their excellent thermal conductivity and their high thermal and chemical resistance, open-cell metal foams are also frequently used in heat exchangers, filters or catalysts of all kinds. They can be used, for example, as a ventilation element, flow control or catalyst support. Applications in the electrochemical industry are also possible. For example, open-cell metal foams with Al, Ni or Zn surfaces serve as a kind of sponge and are used as water filters. Metal foams can also be used as a supporting matrix element with a large surface area for example in Ni- or Zn-based batteries.

There are certainly many other applications for our hybrid foam. Get in touch with us and tell us about your ideas. We can work together with you to find a solution!
